Woolworth’s
Something new (and old) is brewing in Bakersfield. The retail stalwart Woolworth's is making a comeback.
The "OG" of modern-day merchandising, Woolworth's was at the vanguard of the "five-and-dime" store movement once upon a time, chockful of household goods, greeting cards, and toys.
Some locations even had a lunch counter where hungry shoppers could plop onto a plastic-covered stool and order such favorites as grilled cheese, burgers, fries, and frappes. That's my kind of store.
I thought its kitschy reign had come to an end until recently reading the Woolworth's in nearby Bakersfield had re-opened. Its resurrection makes it the "last functioning Woolworth's lunch counter in America."
"I am the world's worst salesman, therefore, I must make it easy for people to buy." - Frank Winfield Woolworth
